Fruits

When storing fruits consider that they will be more likely eaten if displayed in a fruit bowl. The choice to refrigerate depends on the temperature of the room where they are stored, and how quickly the food is to be eaten.

Apples   Will store best in the refrigerator, but room temperature is fine - especially in winter.

Avocados   Once ripe, may be refrigerated to prolong storage. Avocados are ripe when they yield to gentle pressure around the stem. If under-ripe, you can speed up the ripening process by placing the avocado in a brown paper bag with a banana, at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.

Bananas   Ripen at room temperature. Once ripe, can be stored in the refrigerator to prolong life. The skin will turn black but the actual fruit will be unaffected.

Berries   Remove from punnet, then place unwashed on a plate lined with paper towel.

Cherries   Refrigerate in a plastic bag.

Citrus   Store at room temperature. Can be refrigerated for extended storage.

Grapes   Store unwashed in the fridge in a plastic bag or container.

Kiwifruit   Ripen at room temperature. Kiwifruit are ripe when they yield to gentle pressure. Once ripe, they can be refrigerated but separate if possible from other fruit.

Lychees   Refrigerate in a plastic bag or container.

Mandarines   Store at room temperature. Can be refrigerated to prolong storage.

Melons   Store at room temperature. Ripe rockmelon will yield to gentle pressure at the stem, and not appear too green. Once cut, cover all melons with plastic and refrigerate. For convenience, it's a good idea to cut up the melon into chunks and store in a plastic container in the fridge.

Pears   Ripen at room temperature. Ripe pears will yield to gentle pressure. Once ripe, refrigerate to prolong storage.

Pineapples   Store at room temperature. Ripe pineapples should show more yellow than green, and should give a pleasant aroma.

Rhubarb   Remove and discard leaves. Refrigerate stalks in a plastic bag.

Stonefruit   Ripen at room temperature. Once ripe, may be refrigerated to prolong storage.
Vegetables

Generally most vegetables will store best in the crisper section of your refrigerator. Plastic bags and containers may extend life even further. The following vegetables are the exception to this rule:

Potatoes, Sweet Potato, Garlic   Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place.

Pumpkin, Onions   Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place. Wrap cut pieces in plastic and refrigerate.

Tomatoes   Best stored at room temperature. Once ripe, can be refrigereated but flavour is reduced if eaten cold. Remove from fridge at least an hour before use for maximum flavour.
